Community Initiatives- Bringing Listening into Public Spaces

At the Listening Center, we believe listening can transform lives, not just in private, but also in everyday public spaces.
Through community-based projects, we bring listening to where it’s most needed: streets, parks, schools and neighborhoods.

Listening Benches

Just sit, and be there for someone.

In a world where loneliness is widespread, Listening Benches were born from a deep, simple need- to have someone who will truly listen. Inspired by psychiatrist Dixon Chibanda’s project in Zimbabwe, where local grandmothers offered emotional support on public benches, this initiative offers the same gift in Israeli cities.

Together with municipalities and local communities, we place Listening Benches in public spaces across Israel. Volunteers trained by us sit on the benches and offer a safe, non-judgmental space for anyone who needs to pause, and be heard.

Listening in Kindergartens

Listening starts early.

Just as we teach children to say “please” and “thank you,” we can also teach them to listen- from their very first conversations.

Our special program for kindergartens invites children and staff to create their own “Listening Chairs”- a dedicated space for quiet, respectful conversation.

The kids take part in the creative process from start to finish, helping integrate the chair into the daily life of the classroom. This gives listening both a physical presence and emotional meaning- making it a natural part of the educational language and space.

The Human Library

Meet the person, not the stereotype.

This global initiative invites us to replace prejudice with curiosity. Instead of borrowing books – you “borrow” people who share real, personal stories.

These one-on-one conversations help break down barriers and foster empathy.
The Listening Center brings this initiative to communities across Israel.
